3D Printing Workshop

Turn an idea into something you can actually hold, test, and use. In the 3D Printing Workshop, students take on hands-on design challenges while learning the tools and techniques used to create everything from prototypes and products to mechanisms, inventions, and original designs.

1:30–2:30 PM | Grades 3 to 12 | Homeschoolers

Imagine. Engineer. Build. Make It Real.

The 3D Printing Workshop gives students a hands-on introduction to designing and manufacturing real objects—from useful everyday products to moving mechanisms, inventions, games, and original creations.

New for spring, the 3D Printing Workshop now meets every week—and the cost per class is significantly lower than it was in the fall. More frequent classes mean more time to design, print, test, and improve, allowing students to take on more ambitious projects, build stronger technical skills, and move further from an initial idea to a finished creation.

This spring, students will take on a new series of design challenges built around how real products are created. They’ll measure, model, prototype, test, revise, and manufacture their ideas while learning how choices involving shape, strength, tolerances, materials, and print settings affect whether a design actually works.

New students will build the CAD and 3D-printing skills they need from the ground up. Returning students won’t repeat previous projects—they’ll move into more complex builds involving multi-part designs, mechanisms, precision modeling, LiDAR scanning, embedded components, and increasingly independent design work.

  • Design original objects using TinkerCAD and Shapr3D
  • Turn sketches and ideas into accurate, printable 3D models
  • Use LiDAR scanning to bring real-world objects into the design process
  • Build functional parts, mechanisms, games, tools, and inventions
  • Experiment with materials, tolerances, print settings, and assembly
  • Test designs, identify problems, and improve them through multiple versions
  • Take home multiple student-designed 3D printed creations

Every project can scale with the student. Beginners learn the fundamentals while experienced designers take on additional engineering constraints, more advanced software, and harder fabrication challenges. All software, materials, and filament are included.

Spring Projects & Challenges

  • Design for a Purpose: Create useful objects to solve real problems at home, school, or on the go
  • Make It Move: Design hinges, joints, gears, wheels, linkages, and other working mechanisms
  • Scan, Modify & Rebuild: Use LiDAR and digital measurement to capture real objects and design something that fits, replaces, or improves them
  • Product Design: Develop an original product through sketches, prototypes, testing, revision, and final production
  • Engineering Challenges: Work within size, material, strength, time, and other real-world design constraints
  • Advanced Builds: Incorporate magnets, hardware, circuits, multiple materials, moving components, and multi-part assemblies
  • Final Design Challenge: Invent, prototype, refine, print, and present an original creation built around a problem or idea chosen by the student

Guardians are required to complete our waiver before the first club meeting--if they haven't already done so for a different SPARKGROUNDS event. All events are led by professionally trained and insured staff who have passed a Level 2 background check. Students can withdraw from a class series at any time simply by emailing us and prorated refunds are always provided automatically.

This SPARKGROUNDS event is available for direct pay through Florida's Step Up FES-EO, UA, and PEP scholarships. Find events in the Marketplace by selecting 'find providers' and searching for 'SPARKGROUNDS.'
