Open Makerspace at SPARKGROUNDS is built for students who want time, space, and support to bring their own ideas to life.

This is a two-hour, fully open build session where students choose what to work on and how to approach it. Some arrive with a plan; others discover their project once they begin. Both are part of the process. Facilitators are there throughout to guide, troubleshoot, and help move ideas forward—without taking over the work.

Students have access to a wide range of tools and materials, including 3D printers, craft supplies, building components, and electronics. Materials rotate and expand throughout the semester, giving students new possibilities each time they attend. Projects can be started, continued, or completely reimagined from session to session.

There are no set instructions and no identical outcomes. Instead, students work through their own ideas—testing, adjusting, and refining as they go. A first-time student might explore simple builds or small projects; a returning student might take on larger, multi-session builds that require planning, iteration, and persistence.

The extended two-hour format makes a difference. Students have the time to get past the starting point, work through challenges, and actually complete or meaningfully advance their projects.

Classes meet every other week, allowing students to return with new ideas, continue previous builds, or take on entirely new challenges. For a full Wednesday experience, pair this open makerspace with our Makerspace Explorers Workshop or our STE(A)M Explorers Workshop and keep your child creating and tinkering every week.

Guardians are required to complete our waiver before the first club meeting--if they haven't already done so for a different SPARKGROUNDS event. All events are led by professionally trained and insured staff who have passed a Level 2 background check. Students can withdraw from a class series at any time simply by emailing us and prorated refunds are always provided automatically.
