Great ideas deserve to be built. In the 3D Printing Workshop, students learn how to transform ideas into real, physical objects using the same design and fabrication tools used by engineers, inventors, architects, and product designers.

Students begin by learning the fundamentals of 3D modeling, design thinking, and additive manufacturing before progressing into more advanced challenges involving functional parts, moving mechanisms, product design, LiDAR scanning, and digital fabrication. Whether a student is creating their very first model or refining complex multi-part designs, each project is designed to develop creativity, problem-solving, persistence, and technical skill.

Because students work at their own level, new and returning participants can learn side-by-side. Beginners focus on foundational design skills while experienced designers tackle increasingly sophisticated projects using advanced tools, workflows, and fabrication techniques.

• Learn CAD design, prototyping, and digital fabrication
• Use industry-standard tools including TinkerCAD, Shapr3D, and 3D printers
• Progress through increasingly challenging design and engineering projects
• Create original models, inventions, tools, games, and functional products
• Take home multiple self-designed 3D printed creations

Classes meet every other week, giving students time to plan, revise, and develop ideas between sessions. All software, materials, and filament are included.

Projects & Challenges

• Explorer Level: Nameplates, organizational tools, marble mazes, travel kits, two-color printing, and LiDAR scanning projects
• Inventor Level: Useful machines, articulated creatures, product design challenges, launch systems, and advanced LiDAR projects
• Innovator Level: Precision modeling, Shapr3D design, mechanisms, embedded components, magnets, circuits, and advanced fabrication challenges
• Design Process: Sketching, prototyping, testing, revision, and presentation throughout the semester
• Final Showcase: Design, refine, and present an original project built around a student-created idea

Guardians are required to complete our waiver before the first club meeting--if they haven't already done so for a different SPARKGROUNDS event. All events are led by professionally trained and insured staff who have passed a Level 2 background check. Students can withdraw from a class series at any time simply by emailing us and prorated refunds are always provided automatically.
